Meet Mark

Mark Sumption is rooted in agriculture, having returned to the family farm in 1996 after earning his plant science degree from South Dakota State University. Alongside his three brothers, Mark manages a family operation of corn, beans, commercial cows, and a small feed lot.

Beyond agriculture, Mark is dedicated to community service and advocacy in District 1. He served three terms on the Northern Electric Board Coop and was a director at the East River Electric Board, demonstrating his leadership and commitment to rural electrification. Mark's family legacy in community service extends to his father, John, a former state Farmer's Union board member, who instilled in him the values of advocacy and representation. 

Mark is a devoted family man, supported by his wife Michelle and their two daughters, Morgan and McKenna. His advocacy extends beyond the farm gate, focusing on many important issues facing rural communities. He is a strong advocate for a new property tax systems that protects farmers from unfair valuations and rate increases. He is an advocate for public education. In Pierre, will fight to defend smaller school districts from closure and ensure they receive the support they need to function.
